After the Naina Devi hom the Brahmans, left hungry while the Sikhs ate, are furious. Guru Gobind Singh sends Bhai Nand Lal with the savaiya ਜੋ ਕਿਛ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਿਓ ਬਿਧਨਾ to placate them — and the Brahmans turn the Bachittar Natak against him:
Bhai ji said: "The Satguru is Puran Brahm. Do not take him for a mere creature (*jīv*)." They said: "But the Master has said in the Bachittar Natak — *Whoever calls me Parmesar shall fall into the pit of hell.* Are we to accept your word or the Master's?"
Then Bhai Nand Lal ji said: "A word is heard together with its context (*sāṅgopāṅg*). For he has said earlier — *Performing austerity in this way, the two became one form.* Therefore the Satguru has taken the avatar of a devotee, as a performer takes on a costume; and the former form is not to be made manifest."
Then they said: "If the Master is the Cause of causes, then when the Devi appeared why did he close his eyes?" Bhai ji said: "He gave the Devi a place in his eyes. Thereby the Devi has been made to dwell in the eyes of the Khalsa; those who are mlecchas will not be able to bear their radiance. The Satguru from the beginning of the ages has been giving greatness to devotees; in the same way the Master has given the Khalsa both rule and Guruship. These Sikhs of the Guru hear the Shabad daily and repeat the Name; by this their minds are pure. One is an ascetic, one a gyani; therefore they are worthy of worship."
