In the Gyān Ratanāvalī, Guru Angad asks whether he too may expand upon the Bani — as the sages expanded the Bhāgavat — and Guru Nanak explains why he does not. ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਜੀ ਕਹਿਆ, ਜੈਸੇ ਚਤੁਰ ਸਲੋਕੀ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਨੂੰ ਉਪਦੇਸ ਕੀਤੀ ॥ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਨਾਰਦ ਕੋ ਉਪਦੇਸ ਕੀਤੀ ॥ ਨਾਰਦ ਵਿਆਸ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੂ ॥ ਵਿਆਸ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਵਿਸਥਾਰ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਗਵਤ ਕੀਤੀ ॥ ਅੰਗਦ ਕਹਿਆ ਆਗਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਮੈ ਭੀ ਵਿਸਥਾਰ ਕਰਾਂ ॥ ਤਾਂ ਬਾਬੇ ਕਹਿਆ ਜੋ ਇਨਾ ਦਾ ਵਿਸਥਾਰ ਕਰੀਏ ਹੋਰ ਬਾਣੀ ਬੰਦ ਹੋਦੀ ਹੈ ॥ ਬਾਣੀ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਉਚਾਰਨੀਆ ਹੈ ॥ Guru Angad said: "Just as Narayan gave the four-verse teaching (chatuḥ-ślokī) to Brahma, and Brahma taught it to Narad, and Narad to Vyas Dev Ji, and Vyas expanded upon it to compose the Bhāgavat — if it is permitted, I too would expand upon this Bani."
