Before the Goddess appears at Naina Devi, Koer Singh stops the narrative and speaks in his own voice. Everything the reader is about to see the Devi do is pre-labelled a *kautak* — a show performed for others' benefit — with the Guru standing outside it: ਦੋਹਰਾ । This too was a kautak he performed, his mind on the benefit of others (parupkār): keeping himself apart, he placed the burden on the Devi's head. In this manner the Khalsa Panth was set in the Mother's station. The Guru's avatar is for the destruction of Turks and mlecchas. ਪੰਥ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਮਾਤ ਪਦ — the Panth is put in the *position* of the Mother: the Devi's role is assigned to the Khalsa.
