Before the Devi rite begins, Koer Singh has Guru Gobind Singh announce the strategy — and the theology. The Formless (Brahm) does not appear; Prakriti does. So a manifest boon is sought from the manifest power, and the Guru lays the burden on her: "I shall not make myself known as the Guru in this: worship the Devi, and lay the burden upon her. She on whom Brahma, Mahesh and Hari meditate; she who struck down Shumbh and Nishumbh; who slew Mahisha and many like Mur; who holds preservation, dissolution and creation in her hand. Without Prakriti nothing whatever is perceived — and Brahm, beyond, is seen as unattached and formless." Koer Singh repeats the phrase in his own voice during the rite itself (ch. 8, dohra 57): ਧਰ ਦੇਵੀ ਸਿਰ ਭਾਰ — "he placed the burden on the Devi's head."
