Dhavan's 2009 article on Ratan Singh Bhangu's Panth Prakash is an extremely important read, highly recommend it. My first reading of Bhangu made me think how he was trying to reconcile a collective yet individualistic sovereignty (hanne hanne pātśāhī, lit: a ruler on each saddle) with a single state authority, i.e. Ranjit Singh's rule which resulted in subordination of smaller Sikh kingdoms. This article provides relevant context arguing Bhangu was reminiscing about the former, the multiple autonomous Sikh states of the late eighteenth century.
