Mahakavi Santhok Singh, in edition to writing his magnus corpus, the Gurpratap [[Suraj]] Prakash Granth, has also written the [[Garab Ganjini Tika]] *1829* in which he explains the meanings of Japu Ji Sahib, with extensive notation on the poetic devices within the scripture. Mahakavi even quotes from the Manduka Upanishad when explaining the following passage, which examines the meaning of the following verse: ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਦੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੇਦੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥ ([[Adi]]) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਦੰ ਗੁਰੋਂ ਕੌ ਮੁਖ ਦ੍ਵਾਰੇ ਜੋ ਸੁਨਿਓ ਨਾਦ, 'ਨਾਦ' ਨਾਮ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕੋ, ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਮ ਆਤਮ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕੋ । 'Gurmukhi nādan’, that nād [sound] which is heard from the Guru's mouth, nād meaning Shabad, and Shabad meaning teachings about ‘The Self’ [_ātmā updeśa_]. ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੇਦੰ ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਬਦ ਗੁਰੋਂ ਕੇ ਮੁਖ ਕੇ ਸਮਝਿਓ, ਔਰ ਸਭ ਗੌਨ ਲਖੇ । 'Gurmukhi Vedan', listening to the teachings from the mouth of the Guru; all else is to be understood as secondary. ਕਾਹੇ ਤੇ ? ਔਰ ਕਿਸੀ ਤੇ ਆਵਾਗੌਨ ਨਹੀ ਮਿਟਯੋ, ਇਨ ਤੇ ਹੀ ਮੋਖ ਹੋਇਗੀ । ਇਸ ਹੇਤੁ ਤੇ ਸਭਨੋਂ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮਝੇ । Why is this? The cycle of coming and going, through other means does not get removed, this is the only means by which one is liberated. For this reason, the Guru is to be understood as the foremost [gurmukh], above all others. ਵੇਦੰ ਕਹੀਐ ਵੇਤੰ, ਵੇਤੰ ਨਾਮ ਜਾਨਨਵਾਰੇ ਕੋ; ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ - ਬ੍ਰਹਮਵਿਤ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੈਵ ਭਵਤਿ । 'Vedan' means 'Vetan', Vetan means to be a ‘knower’ [of Braham]. Proof:  "The Knower of Brahman is Brahman Itself" - _Manduka Upanishad_. ਕਿਆ ਜਾਨਿਓ ? ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ । ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਮ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੋ । 'ਗੁ' ਅਰਥ ਅੰਧੇਰੇ ਕੋ, ਲੱਛਨਾ ਸੋ ਜੜ ਕੋ । 'ਰੁ' ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਕੋ, ਲੱਛਨਾ ਸੋਂ ਚੇਤਨ ਕੋ । ਜੋ ਜੜ ਅੰਤਹਕਰਨ ਤੇ ਆਦਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਚੇਤਨ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਗੁਰੁ । What is it that is known? 'Gurmukhi rahiā samāī'. Guru meaning Braham [the Divine]. 'Gu' meaning from darkness, signifying inertness or unconsciousness. 'Ru' meaning illumination, a characteristic of consciousness, that which provides light the inert inner faculties [mind, intellect, ego, memory, etc] – that is the Guru. ਤਿਸ ਕੋ ਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਆ? ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਜਾਨਤਾ ਭਯੋ । ਕਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਜਾਨ੍ਯੋ? ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ । 'ਸਮਾਈ' ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲਨੇ ਕੋ । ਸਰਬ ਮੈਂ ਮਿਲ ਰਹ੍ਯੋ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਊਨ ਕਹੀਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਖੀਤਾ, ਜੈਸੇ ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਤੇ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਊ ਸਥਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਤੈਸੇ ਸਰਬ ਮੈਂ ਮਿਲ ਰਹਯੋ ਹੈ । ਇਤਯਰਥ । What does ‘mukhi’ mean [of the Gurmukhi]. It means the foremost knower. What does this foremost knower realize? ‘rahiā samāī’ That the Divine resides within all. ‘Samāī’ means union – that which is pervading and united in all – without that, no place is seen as complete anywhere, just as without ‘space’ [akāś] no place exists at all, in the same way it is pervading all. Thus is the meaning. ਇਸ ਤੁਕ ਮੈਂ ਯਮਕਾਲੰਕਾਰ ਹੈ । In this line there is the paronomasia [where one word is repeated but carries a different meaning] ਲੱਛਨ - ਇਕ ਪਦ ਬਾਰਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਜਿ ਆਵੈ । ਅਰਥਹਿ ਭਿੰਨ ਭਿੰਨ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਵੈ । ਸੋ ਯਮਕਾਲੰਕਾਰ ਬਖਾਨੈਂ । ਕਵਿ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਸਿੰਘ ਗੁਣੀ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨੈਂ । When one word is reused many times, with varying meanings springing forth, this is called (the lyrical device) Yamak Alankar, Poet Santhok Singh relates these characteristics and evidence. ਇਹਾਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਏਕ ਪਦ ਅਨੇਕ ਵਾਰ ਆਯੋ । ਅਰਥ ਭਿੰਨ ਭਿੰਨ ਭਯੋ, ਯਾਂਤੇ ਯਮਕ । Within this line the word Gurmukhi was used multiple times with a variety of different meanings, therefore, this is a Yamak Alankar. ਗਰਬ ਗੰਜਨੀ ਟੀਕਾ, ਪੰਨਾ 43 Garab Ganjini Tika, Page 43 ![[guru nanak gurmukh.png]]
