At the beginning of Santokh Singh's commentary on Japuji Sahib, he outlines his intended purpose behind the construction of the text: ਸ੍ਰੀ ਜਪੁਜੀ ਕੇ ਅਰਥ ਪਰਿ ਪਰਬਰਤੌਂ ਹਿਤ ਸਾਥ । ਕਥੌਂ ਤਥਾ ਹੈ ਜਥਾ ਮਤਿ, ਬਿਘਨ ਮਥਹਿਂ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਥ ।੧੭। I now begin my discussion on the meanings of the Exalted Japuji, I will explain it accordingly to whatever intellect I have, may the Master Guru remove any obstacles. ਸ੍ਰੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਨਿਕ ਸਰਸ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੇ ਦੁਤਿ ਪਾਇ । ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਸਬਦ ਸੁ ਸਿੰਧ ਮੈ ਅਰਥ ਸੁਧਾ ਦਰਸਾਇ ।੧੮। Enshrining this jewel (Japuji), the very essence of the Exalted Nanak, within my heart, I experience such radiance! His words are like an ocean, within which the ambrosial meanings become apparent. ਜਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਸੰਸੇ ਸਨੇ ਹਨਿਹੌਂ ਉੱਤਰ ਲੇਖ । ਦੂਖਨ ਦੇਉਂ ਦਿਖਾਇਕੈ ਭੂਖਨ ਹ੍ਵੈਂ ਸੁ ਬਿਸ਼ੇਖ ।੧੯। Wherever there are questions or doubts (of interpretation/meaning), there I will provide responses. In exposing the faults of these questions, I will show such passages to be only outstanding ornaments. ਗੁਰ ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਉਰ ਊਰ ਜੇ ਸੁਨਤ ਸਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਇਂ । ਬਹੁਰ ਨ ਸੰਸੈ ਸੋਚਹੀਂ ਪਠਹਿਂ ਗੁਨਹਿਂ ਇਹ ਜੋਇ ।੨੦। If one establishes full faith in the Guru, then by listening to these responses everything will be resolved. One will not longer have any doubts or questions, they will read and study these qualities (within the text). ਬ੍ਯੰਗ ਲੱਛਨਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਧੁਨਿ ਨੀਕੇ ਦੇਉਂ ਦਿਖਾਇ। ਅਲੰਕਾਰ ਸਭ ਤੁਕਨ ਕੇ ਲਿਖਹੌਂ ਪਰਖਿ ਬਨਾਇ ।੨੧। I will properly demonstrate many suggestive, figurative, and implied meanings, Along with all the literary devices of ornamentation for all lines, I will note them after careful examination and arrangement. ਏਕ ਦੋਇ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਚਾਰ ਤੇ ਫੁਰੈਂ ਅਰਥ ਮਤਿ ਜੋਇ । ਜੇ ਸਿਖ੍ਯਨ ਤੇ ਸ਼੍ਰਤ ਸੁਨੇ ਸਰਬ ਲਿਖੋਂ ਮੈ ਸੋਇ ।੨੨। One, two, three, or four meanings may unfold per line, according to my intellect. But whatever I have heard from Sikhs, I will write all these multiple meanings down. ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਕੇ ਬਿਖੈ ਕਾਵ੍ਯ ਰੀਤਿ ਸਭਿ ਆਹਿ । ਕਿਨਹੁਂ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਨਾ ਕਰੀ ਜਗ ਅਸ ਪਿਖਿ ਮਮ ਭਈ ਚਾਹਿ ।੨੩। All aspects of poetry reside within the Exalted Gurbani. Yet none have openly revealed this, seeing this great need, I desire to bring them forth. ਧਰਨੀ ਹੀਰਨਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਸ ਗੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਮਤਿ ਮੋਲ । ਖਨਵਾਰੀ ਜ੍ਯੋਂ ਖੋਜਿ ਕੈ ਅਰਥ ਦਿਖਾਊਂ ਅਮੋਲ ।੨੪। The wisdom of Gurbani is like a diamond hidden in the earth, Like a miner, I will dig and bring forth its priceless meanings.
