When Mata Sahib Devi's father first requested that Guru Gobind Singh marry his daughter the Guru refused with the explanation given below. Upon further discussion Guru Gobind Singh agreed to marry Sahib Devi, his third wife, but did not bear any children with Her. Listening to this request of the Sikh *to marry his daughter Sahib Devi*, from Sri Guru's mouth He spoke, "When I made the Goddess manifest and had Darshan of the Mother Kalika. From that moment I had forsaken the householder *grishti* life. Within my mind I had attached myself to the life of a celibate *Brahmchari*. For this reason I cannot marry your daughter, I have not hidden this fact *of my celibacy* from anyone."
