One day, within the court of Guru Gobind Singh, the Rāgīs performed the vār (ballad) of Gopi Chand in the morning, which the Khalsa deeply enjoyed. Gopi Chand was a king of old, who was a great example of detachment. However, this vār was not enjoyed by everyone, amongst the congregation, one Sikh stood up and clasped his hands, questioning why this took place. According to him, everything else besides Gurbāṇī was kachī bāṇī (unripe utterances), gesturing towards the lines of Guru Amardas (Besides the True Guru, all other bāṇī is unripe). This also relates to another dialogue [[In Praise of Love - Sassi Punnu]], which occurs in a later section of the Suraj Prakash.
Guru Gobind Singh explained this is incorrect, rather:
Whoever these great detached servants [of the Divine] are,
The Great Guru is universally accepting to all,
[Including] their bāṇī [stories/songs], which by reciting and listening to,
One has qualities like peace, detachment, wisdom arise.
In this way, that bāṇī which purifies the mind,
Understand it as having a likeness to Gurbāṇī.
However [don't just accept things on authority] - if a saying from the Vedas is without any meaning, just describing nonsense, even said by sages and Gods
Then it is admirable to renounce such sayings,
If one accepts such useless sayings, then one would go travel towards hell.
However, even if a kid says something,
Which you are sure has a sublime essence to it.
Accepting such a saying would be profitable,
By which a person can destroy their vices,
Or in which it has the praise of Parameśvar,
Or the understanding of truth vs falsehood.
The stories of the great incarnations (avatāras),
The treasure troves of virtue like Ram and Krishna,
The True Gurus, the Exalted Guru Nanak to Guru Tegh Bahadur,
Their sayings, stories, and conversations.
The idiot minded who dispute/critique such material,
They aren't able to understand the secret, the beautiful virtues within,
Such idiots are destroyed, by the beatings from Death,
Continually being ruined, they end up in the cycle of birth and death.
That is why, those who have recited something helpful,
The wise accept and absorb it all,
By reading and listening one adopts the Guru's mindset,
That person crosses over this ocean-like life.
That person who does not listen, read, or put into action such auspicious teachings/virtues,
And raises critiques/doubts over such bāṇī (words/sayings/teachings/stories)
That person travels to the hell - losing this life, he then regrets it.
I too have written bāṇī for the the sake of the Khalsa (see [[Dasam]])
Many others have written compositions as well,
Like the Mahabharata and other translated texts,
[I have commissioned] wise poets to translate them into the vernacular.
We are translating them for the Panth,
You should read it - and recite it to everyone!
Gurpratap [[Suraj]] Granth, Rut (season) 3, chapter 51.
