ਬੈਠਿ ਕਹੇ ਅੰਗਦ ਸੰਗ ਬਚਨਾ । ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਜਿਨਹਿਂ ਮਨ ਰਚਨਾ ।
'ਅਬ ਤੁਮ ਜਗਤ ਉਧਾਰਨ ਕਾਰਨ । ਮੂਲਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਭ ਕਰਹੁ ਸੁਧਾਰਨ ॥92॥
Guru Nanak sat, speaking with the Exalted Angad, whose mind was ever absorbed in altruistic service,
"Now, for the purpose of liberating the world, refine and present in its most auspicious form the Mūl Mantra.
ਮਮ ਬਾਨੀ ਗੁਨਖਾਨੀ ਦੇਖਾ । ਲੀਜੈ ਬੀਨੈ ਬੀਨ ਵਿਸੇਖਾ ।
ਹਮਹਿਂ ਸੁਨਾਵਤਿ ਜਾਉ ਉਚਾਰਾ । ਬੰਧ ਮ੍ਰਿਜਾਦ ਕਰਹੁ ਉਪਕਾਰਾ ॥93॥
Oh Treasure-Trove-of-Virtue (Angad), you've seen my writings (bāṇī), select compositions and recite them to us, for the good of the world, create the [new composition's] limit (alternative reading: establish the ritual of its recitation)
ਹਮ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਜਨਮੈਂ ਪਸ਼ਚਾਤਾ । ਤਿਨ ਸਭਿ ਕੌ ਹੋਵੇ ਗਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ।
ਜਿਉਂ ਜਹਾਜ ਚੜ ਸਾਗਰ ਤਰਿਹੀਂ । ਤਿਉਂ ਤਿਹ ਪਢਿ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਉਧਰਿਹੀਂ ॥94॥
Those who take birth after us, this composition will be the liberation granter to them all!
Just like when boarding a boat, one crosses the ocean, in the same way, reading this bāṇī, one will cross over the ocean-like life.
ਸੁਨਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅੰਗਦ ਬੰਦਨ ਠਾਨੀ । ਬੀਨ ਬੀਨ ਨੀਕੇ ਗੁਰਬਾਨੀ ।
ਆਨਿ ਸੁਨਾਵਨ ਕੀਨਿ ਸੁਹਾਨੀ । ਤਬਿ 'ਜਪੁ' ਨਾਮ ਧਰ੍ਯੋ ਗੁਨਖਾਨੀ ॥95॥
Listening to this, the Exalted Angad bowed, and would arrive there to pleasantly recite the selected portions of bāṇī written by Guru Nanak, the treasury of virtue, who thus named the composition Japu.
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਪੁਨ ਭਾਖੀ। ਜੋ ਨਰ ਹੈ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਅਭਿਲਾਖੀ।
ਨਿਸ ਮਹਿਂ ਉਠੇ ਸਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸ਼ਨਾਨਾ। ਜਪੁ ਪੜਿ ਹੈ ਇਕ ਚਿਤ ਸਵਧਾਨਾ ॥96॥
Then from His Exalted Mouth [Guru Nanak], He recited praise of Japu Ji, "Any man, who desires Sikhi, should awake in the early hours of the day, bathe, and recite Japu with a single-pointed attentive mind.
ਅਰਥ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਉਰ ਮਾਂਹੀ । ਮੁਕਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੋ ਸੰਸੇ ਨਾਂਹੀ ।
ਜਪੁਜੀ ਸੇਵਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੁ ਜਾਂਹੀ । ਮਮ ਸਮੀਪ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੁਇ ਤਾਂਹੀ ॥97॥
He should contemplate its meanings within his heart - by doing so, without a doubt, he will be liberated.
Those who lovingly serve Japu ji, they will obtain nearness with Me.
ਧਰਹਿ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਪਢਿ ਹੈ ਇਕ ਮਨ । ਹੋਹਿ ਸਪੂਰਨ ਤਿਹ ਕੀ ਤਤਛਿਨ ।
ਜੰਤੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਪੁਨ ਤੰਤ੍ਰ ਮਹਾਨਾ । ਭੂਤ ਜਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਤ ਦੈਤ ਬਲਵਾਨਾ ॥98॥
Those who, with focus, recite it with desires in mind, these desires will be quickly fulfilled.
No spell, mantra, mighty charm, ghost, spirit or powerful demon..
ਤਿਹ ਸਮੀਪ ਨਹਿਂ ਆਵੈ ਕੋਈ । ਪਠਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਿਤ ਨਰ ਜਿਹ ਹੋਈ।
ਮਾਨੁਖ ਦੇਹਿ ਜੀਵ ਜਿਨ ਪਾਈ । ਜਪੁ ਬਿਹੀਨ ਹੈ ਬਾਦ ਗਵਾਈ ॥99॥
Will come close to that person who recites Japu Ji everyday.
It is so rare to obtain a human body - without Japu Ji, such a life is lost in vain."
ਸਿੱਖਨ ਯੋਗ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰ ਕੇਰਾ । ਇਕ ਉਤ ਨਿਤ ਸੁਖ ਦੇਤਿ ਘਨੇਰਾ ।
ਹੋਇ ਸਿੱਖ ਜਪੁ ਕੰਠ ਨ ਕੀਨੋ । ਨਾਉਂ ਧਰੀਕ ਬੇਖ ਧਰਿ ਲੀਨੋ ॥100॥
[Kavi Santokh Singh now says]
For the Sikh of his Sikhs, the Guru's mantra [Japu Ji] was created,
delivering ever-fresh abundance and peace.
Becoming Sikh, if one does not have Japu Ji memorized, he is only a Sikh in name and garb.
ਇਸਤੇ ਔਰ ਨ ਕੋ ਬਿਧਿ ਊਚੀ । ਜਪੁ ਸੇਵਨ ਇਕ ਮਨ ਹੁਇ ਸੂਚੀ ।
ਕਾਮਧੇਨੁ ਚਿੰਤਾਮਨਿ ਸੁਰਤਰੁ । ਕਰਿ ਨਹਿਂ ਸਕੇ ਆਧਤਿਲ ਸਮਸਰਾ ॥101॥
No practice is higher than this - to serve Japu Ji with a singular mind after bathing.
Kāmadhenu, the wish granting cow, Chintāmani, the wish granting jewel, the Kalpavriksha, the wish granting tree - all of their boons would not equal to a sesame seed beside Japu Ji Sahib.
ਦੋਹਰਾ ।
ਮਹਿਮਾ ਬਰਨੀ ਅਲਪ ਮੈਂ, ਕਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਮਤਿ ਮੰਦ।
ਊਚ ਅਗਾਧ ਅਕੱਥ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਜਪੁਜੀ ਸੁਖਕੰਦ ॥102॥
I have but briefly praised Japu Ji, my limited intellect cannot do it justice.
Japu Ji, the root of bliss, its praise is so lofty, unfathomable, and ineffable.
ਚੌਪਈ:
ਮਨ ਮੂਰਖ! ਨਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਜਪੁ ਸੇਵ । ਜਿਹ ਕੋ ਚਾਹੈਂ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਦੇਵ ।
ਕਿਤ ਬਿਧਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਦੇਹੀ । ਸ੍ਰੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਮਗ ਲੇਹੀਂ ॥103॥
Oh stupid mind! Daily serve Japu Ji!
Even the sages and gods desire and think of ways to obtain a human body,
so that they can walk on the path of Guru Nanak's Sikhi.
ਜਪੁਜੀ ਸੇਵ ਕਟਹਿ ਜਮ ਫਾਸੀ । ਬਹੁਰ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਪਦਵੀ ਅਬਿਨਾਸ਼ੀ ।
ਅਸ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਚਹਿਤ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ । ਤੁਮ ਕਉ ਤਉ ਸਭਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥104॥
Serving Japu Ji cuts the noose of death, after which one will obtain the stage of immortality. Oh my mind! This desired state [of human birth] you've already obtained it all!
ਬਾਰਬਾਰ ਕ੍ਯਾ ਕਹੇਂ ਬਨਾਈ । ਹ੍ਵੈ ਅਬ ਅੰਤ ਸਮਾਂ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ।
ਤਿਹ ਛਿਨ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਹਿ ਮਲਿ ਹਾਥਾ । ਹਮ ਕਿਉਂ ਖੋਯੋ ਜਨਮ ਅਕਾਥਾ ॥105॥
What can I say over and over again - the end of life will be so painful.
At that time you will regret, clasping your hands together, thinking how you've wasted your life.
ਨਰ ਤਨ ਦੁਰਲਭ ਇਕ ਇਹ ਪਾਯੋ । ਪੁਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਿਖ ਬੇਖ ਬਨਾਯੋ।
ਤੀਜੋ ਕਲਜੁਗ ਕੋ ਹੈ ਕਾਲਾ । ਬੋਰੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਮਹਿਂ ਹੁਇ ਦ੍ਯਾਲਾ ॥106॥
Firstly, you've obtained this rare human life, secondly you've adopted the garb of a Sikh of the True Guru. Thirdly it is the Dark Age [kaliyuga], in which a little service results in the Divine being gracious upon you.
ਐਸ ਸਮੈ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਚੁਕ ਜਾਈ । ਚੜਿ ਕਰਿ ਮੇਰੁ ਰਸਾਤਲ ਪਾਈ ।
ਜਪੁਜੀ ਕੰਠ ਨਿਤਾਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਰਟੈ । ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਲਮਲ ਕਟੈ ॥107॥
If you miss this opportunity now, it is like falling from Sumeru mountain (mythologically the highest peak), into the depths of the deepest hell.
So recite, by memory, Japu Ji everyday, to cut away the sins of countless previous lives.
ਸਨੈ ਸਨੈ ਮਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੋਇ । ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਭਵ ਬੰਧਨ ਖੋਇ ।
ਸ਼ਬਦ ਅੱਭ੍ਯਾਸ ਕਿਯੋ ਨਰ ਜਾਂਹੀ । ਰਹ੍ਯੋ ਨ ਕਰਨੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਛੁ ਤਾਂਹੀਂ ॥108॥
Slowly, slowly, through this practice the mind becomes pure, liberation is obtained, and all of one's bondage is destroyed.
For those who practice the Guru's Word, there remains no other task / action to be completed.
