After leaving Chamkaur Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh was separated from the Singhs, and had sustained injuries to his feet. Maan Singh, Daya Singh, and Dharam Singh found Guru Gobind Singh and then they proceeded to Gulaba Masand's house where this dialogue takes place.
ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਤਿਹ ਸੰਗ ਉਚਾਰਾ ॥ 'ਸੁੱਖਾ ਮਿਰਚਾਂ ਆਨਿ ਉਦਾਰਾ ॥39॥

ਸੁਨਤਿ ਗੁਲਾਬਾ ਤੂਰਨ ਗਯੋ ॥ ਜਾਇ ਬਜ਼ਾਰ ਖਰੀਦਨ ਕਿਯੋ ॥40॥

When the Guru was seated in this orchard, the Masand went quickly to the city to complete his task. He desired an intoxicant to drink *which would remove this pain*.
ਬੂਝੇ ਤਬਿ ਭੀ ਸੰਗੀ ਤੀਨ ॥ ਸੁੱਖਾ ਕਿਸ ਕੇ ਨਿਕਟ ਕਹੀਨ ॥
ਮਾਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੇ ਥੋ ਕੁਛ ਪਾਲੇ ॥ ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਖੋਲਿ ਨਿਕਾਲੇ ॥42॥

ਥੋਰਾ ਹੁਤੋ ਤ੍ਯਾਰ ਕਰਿ ਦਯੋ ॥ ਤਿਖਾ ਸਹਿਤ ਸੋ ਪੀਵਨ ਕਯੋ ॥
ਹੋਇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਬਰ ਦੇਵਤਿ ਜੋਵੈਂ ॥ 'ਪੰਥ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਮਹਿਂ ਤੁਮ ਹੋਵੈਂ ॥43॥

ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਇਕ ਘਟੀ ਬਿਤਾਈ ॥ ਚਾਹ ਅਮਲ ਕੀ ਰਹੀ ਤਦਾਈ ॥44॥
It will be beautifully adorned in your attire and demeanor - countless in number they will be called Akali Nihangs." In this way about half an hour passed, but their desire for more intoxicants remained.
