# Sri Gur Pad Prem Prakash *1880 · Baba Sumer Singh* Written in 1880 by the renowned poet Sumer Singh (1847–1903), this Brajbhasha text is a historical narration of Guru Gobind Singh's life, drawing largely on Santokh Singh's Suraj Prakash. Sumer Singh lived an extraordinary life — master poet, interpreter of Sikh scripture, historian, and Jathedar of Takht Patna Sahib — and was famed as the teacher of Ayodhya Prasad Upadhyay ("Hariaudh"), one of the last of the great Braj poets. He chaired the Faridkot Tika committee, which produced the first full exegesis of the Guru Granth Sahib. As scholar Valerie Ritter notes, for Sumer Singh poetry functioned "as a connecting agent" across religious lines — he aimed to unite Indians spiritually and culturally through his verse.
